Is sadness the highest manifestation of beauty?

I read somewhere that Edgar Allan Poe considered sadness to be the highest manifestation of beauty. Why is that?

Some one had said: "our sweetest songs are those that tell the saddest thoughts" Was that William Wordsworth?

Anyway your question is not very far from that lyrics.

I donot know why EAPoe had felt it that way.My wild thought wanders around the explanation that when a very beautiful thing is seen.. a stunningly beautiful woman…… it evokes a great happy feeling. But at the same time the likes of Poe may start thinking that such a beauty will fade, will age and will ultimately perish . This very thought may trigger sadness,.

But , in some ways , that does not make sense too. The sunset or the sunrise , the majestic mountains are all tremendous beauties. They never age. They will always evoke happiness.
i hope EA Poe answers this question.

Sometimes we see something very beautiful and we cry. May be because we understand that we cannot create anything as beautiful as this. Or maybe because we know it was not created for us.
Sadness is a good emotion. It makes you better. Beauty will save the world

I think it could be because of you dont try to show yourself prettier than you are, you look like the way you do when you are sad.

Wow! nevr thought of that. I remember when my grandmother died, as sad as it was, I felt a tremendous sense of deep beauty in her passing. Strange, This is a concept worth thinking about, for sure.

That is hard.. perhaps to Edgar Allan Poe beauty is when a person is most exposed to their feelings and sadness can really pervade your entire beaing.

It does not wash with me though.. Sadness is horrible not beautiful so I found your question very hard.

In solitude, quiteness, sadness, serenity, that we truly see the inner beauty of the person, the appreciation of life, the greatness of God, the journey of finding the real self.

Well I don't know if sadness is beauty or if beauty is sad but when I see something overwhelmingly beautiful, it makes me cry. Standing on a mountaintop in Bavaria. Seeing the mist rising off the lake at sunrise in Algonquin. Listening to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata or any exquisite & melancholy piece of classical music. Looking into my lover's blue eyes when he says "I love you."

Artists are very sensitive to beauty & often overcome by sadness. Edgar Allan Poe had a rather sombre view of the world. He wrote incredible macabre fiction and poetry about love, loss, death. I love his poem "The Raven" "and his eyes had all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming and the lamplight o'er him streaming cast his shadow on the floor & my life from out that shadow that lies frozen on the floor shall be lifted nevermore." Happy Halloween!

beauty and sadness can't be separated…

beauty makes me cry and sadness makes me cry…

I'm quite melancholic and I think sadness makes you delve into your emotions which although sad can be beautiful….
